We set up The Handmade Soap Company in 2010.
We discovered the wonderful world of handmade soap back in 2009 after a visit to a market in Atherton Highlands, Australia.
The local soaps were amazing, made with natural ingredients and were extremely good on sensitive skin. Something Donagh knows all about. We were hooked.
We have not stopped since.
Donagh Quigley & Gemma McGowan
Our soaps and lotions are handmade with care, by us in our factory in County Meath, Ireland. We use natural ingredients from plant and mineral extracts. The only exception is the binding agent which makes up 0.2% of our body lotions and ensures they arrive as they left us.
Our products are free from parabens, SLS’s, petrochemicals, synthetic colours and fragrances which is why we know they’ll be kind. None of our products are tested on animals, and we promise that they never will.
We tread as lightly as we can. We use FSC approved card in our packaging, and print it with environmentally friendly vegetable-derived inks. We believe in being honest and kind – by nature.
We started at home, spending months testing and researching to find the best ingredients to create the best formulations, which are a central part of the range today. Our handmade soap quickly found its community and we started to grow throughout Ireland. Ours became a busy kitchen, filling orders days and nights.
The family grew - from soap to hand care lotions & washes, bath & shower, body care & lip balms and recently to our home range of candles and diffusers.
After our four years we were running out of space. So we moved to a former linen mill in Slane, Co Meath, Ireland.
Now we are almost six, and our products are on shelves all over Ireland, as well as in Brazil, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Russia. We are the No 1 Irish natural bath & body brand, and are thrilled to have won a shelf-full of awards for our products. Our vision is to grow while remaining true to our handmade roots.
Our way is the natural, skin kind and earth kind way.
We use 100% natural botanical ingredients sourced from producers committed to ethical means of extracting their products.
We use a high percentage of botanical and herbal extracts in each product. Our ingredients like lavender, may chang, lemongrass, cedarwood, grapefruit, rosemary, and mint have been used for hundreds of years because of their restorative and energising qualities. And they smell great.
We started out with two pots on our stove, and we remain committed to the handmade way. This means our batches are fresher. It also means we can slow down and take care. Our ingredients are precious and our way is to protect them.
Because we are working with a high ratio of natural ingredients, our body lotions need binding agents to prevent separation (always difficult). We keep the percentage to the minimum needed to make sure that they arrive as they left us.
Our factory is an upcycled linen mill. Our way is to be as green as we can be. Our processes in our factory are built on being responsible with all of our resources.
But we’re always looking for ways to be greener. If you’d like to find out more about our journey please mail us here.
And yes. Sometimes we do wear Birkenstocks. Sometimes even in winter.
